Fall Herb Propagation: Clone Your Kitchen Favorites
Summer is winding down, but your herb pots do not have to. Fall is one of our favorite quiet windows for cloning kitchen favorites indoors. Soft growth is still going, the outdoor heat is easing up, and a small tray on a bright windowsill can keep basil, mint, oregano, and thyme coming while the garden slows down.
If you have ever bought the same herb plant three times in one season, you already know the pitch. Cloning the plants you already love is cheaper, faster, and a little more satisfying. You keep the flavor and the habit of a plant that already thrives in your kitchen light.
Why fall works so well for herbs
Basil, mint, oregano, thyme, and similar soft herbs root readily from fresh tip cuttings. Cooler indoor days mean less wilt while roots form. You still want bright, indirect light and a lightly moist medium. Once nights turn chilly, skip the outdoor beds and bring the work inside where you control the conditions.
Mint is especially generous. One healthy stem can turn into a whole new pot before the holidays. Basil likes warmer spots near the window, and oregano or thyme can handle a slightly firmer stem without much fuss.
