Why Fall Is a Prime Cutting Season
Summer is winding down, but plant work does not have to. Fall is one of our favorite quiet windows for cuttings. Soft growth is still going on many shrubs, herbs, and houseplants. Outdoor heat is easing. A bright tray indoors can turn a few healthy tips into a whole new set of pots before winter settles in.
If you have ever waited until spring to multiply a favorite plant, you already know the cost of waiting. Fall lets you start now, while the parent plant still has energy and you still have good light on the sill.
Why fall works so well
Cuttings root best when the stem is still active but not stressed by heat. In early fall, many plants are still pushing workable tips. Cooler days mean less wilt while roots form. You keep humidity and moisture under control indoors, and you are not racing summer sun.
That mix is why fall feels like a “prime” cutting season for home growers. You get softwood and early semi-hardwood material at the same time, which means you can clone kitchen herbs, soft ornamentals, and a few woodier favorites in one short stretch of weekends.
Match the powder to the wood
Keep the process light. Take a clean tip just below a node, strip the lower leaves, and give the cut end a light dip in Hormex Rooting Powder. Tap off the extra. Seat it in a Hormex Rooting Cube or another clean starter medium, keep the medium lightly moist, and wait for that gentle tug of resistance before potting up.
Rooting Powder #1 is the go-to for soft tips and kitchen herbs. Basil, mint, oregano, soft ornamental stems, and similar material usually want this lighter strength.
Rooting Powder #3 steps up for firmer, semi-hardwood cuttings. If the stem feels less soft and more woody, #3 is the better match.
When you move a rooted cutting into its next pot, a light feed with Vitamin B1 & Hormone Concentrate can help ease transplant shock. It is an optional add-on, not a required step for every tray.
A short fall habit
We like treating this as a small seasonal ritual. One Saturday morning, one tray, a few cuttings from the plants you reach for most. By the time winter cooking and indoor shelves get quiet, you still have fresh green coming on.
